Knowing the needs of students for whom English is an additional language or dialect Australia is a culturally and linguistically diverse nation. Today, Australian students come from over 2,000 different ethnic origins. Consequently, there are many students for whom English is an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) that access the Australian curriculum. In Australia, about 25% of primary and secondary students learn English as an additional language or dialect. However, in some schools this figure can reach 90%. Definition of students for which English is an additional language or dialectEAL/D students are those whose first language is a language or dialect other than English and require additional support to develop the competition in Australian Standard English (SAE). Many Australian school students are learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D). EAL/D students are those whose first language is a language or dialect other than Australian standard English and require additional support to help them develop English language skills. EAL/D students come from various backgrounds and may include:EAL/D students enter Australian schools at different ages and stages of schooling and at different stages of English learning. They have diverse talents and capacities and a variety of previous learning experiences and literacy levels in their first language and Australian standard English. EAL/D students represent a significant and growing percentage of students in NSW schools. For some, the school is the only place used by Australian standard English. EAL/D students are simultaneously learning a new language and the knowledge, understanding and skills of a program through that new language. They require additional time and support, together with informed education that explicitly addresses their linguistic needs and assessments that take into account their developing linguistic competence.
