Today, Australian students come from over 2,000 different ethnic origins. Consequently, there are many students for whom English is an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) that access the Australian curriculum. In Australia, about 25% of primary and secondary students learn English as an additional language or dialect. However, in some schools this figure can reach 90%. They require additional time and support, together with informed education that explicitly addresses their linguistic needs and assessments that take into account their developing linguistic competence.
